For decades, the 1989 Heisei-era classic Godzilla vs. Biollante has held a unique, almost mythical status among kaiju fans. It’s not just because of its tragic sci-fi/horror fusion—a rose/Godzilla/human hybrid monster—or its prescient themes of genetic engineering. It’s because, for years, the English dub of this film was the hardest piece of the Godzilla franchise to legally (or illegally) acquire.
As of today, the "official" way to hear the Miramax dub is the 2019 Animego Blu-ray (now itself going out of print). But the Internet Archive copy remains a digital fossil—a reminder that sometimes, the monsters we try to bury (or lock away in rights hell) find a way to grow back, stronger and stranger than before, in the unlikeliest of swamps.
