In the early 2000s, enterprise communication was dominated by email, intranets, and shared drives. Information was siloed, collaboration was clunky, and finding expertise inside a large company was difficult.

Jive Software was founded in 2001 (originally as a consumer community platform) but pivoted to enterprise social networking around 2006–2008.
