Three families. One Thanksgiving. Chaos. What Modern Family understood is that “modern” doesn’t mean perfect — it means expanded. More parents, more stepparents, more in-laws, more exes, more “he’s not my real grandfather but he taught me to shave.”

Take Lily, Mitchell and Cam’s adopted daughter. In earlier decades, her family would have been a Very Special Episode. Here, she’s just a kid who rolls her eyes at her dads’ matching sweater vests. Or Manny, who calls Jay “Jay” for two seasons before quietly switching to “Dad” — no speech, no hug, just a kid realizing that the grumpy old man who drives him to soccer practice is, in fact, his father.

Who picks up Lily from school when Cam has a clown gig? Mitchell. Who fixes the broken step at Jay’s house? Phil, badly. Who talks Claire down from a spreadsheet meltdown? Gloria, with a glass of tequila and a story about her aunt’s second cousin.

The Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker clan doesn’t just tolerate difference — it runs on it. Jay (Ed O’Neill), the gruff patriarch, marries Gloria (Sofía Vergara), a Colombian firecracker with a son, Manny, who wears velvet blazers and quotes poetry. Jay’s daughter, Claire (Julie Bowen), is a Type-A perfectionist married to Phil (Ty Burrell), a real estate agent who’s basically a golden retriever in human form. And Jay’s son, Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), is a reserved lawyer whose partner, Cam (Eric Stonestreet), is a flamboyant former farm boy who once led a one-man Les Mis in his car.

Modern Family blew up the fence.

The show’s funniest episodes aren’t the big emotional beats — they’re the ones about scheduling. The Valentine’s Day dinner that becomes a four-couple fiasco. The vacation rental with one less bedroom than advertised. The epic, multi-car caravan to a lake house that ends with everyone eating gas-station pizza in a parking lot.
