Jamie, upon learning Claire has been taken, insists on confronting The Watch himself, despite still being weak. He and Murtagh march into the camp. Jamie demands Claire’s release, but Taran recognizes him — not as an outlaw, but as Jamie Fraser of Lallybroch. Taran reveals that Jamie’s father, Brian Fraser, once saved his life, and out of respect, he offers Jamie a deal: if Jamie and his men help The Watch raid a nearby farmstead owned by a wealthy Scotsman who refuses to pay protection, then Claire will be freed and they will be allowed to leave in peace.
