The word “pork” hit him like a physical blow. The image of raw, bleeding meat flashed in his mind. His stomach lurched. He looked at the steaming bowl of tonkotsu ramen. The broth looked like dirty water. The pork slice was a slab of… something wrong . He tried a piece. It was ash in his mouth. Chewy, bland, repulsive. He spat it out, gagging.

He looked up. A young man with white hair and a gentle smile leaned against a tree. He wore an eye-patch. Behind him stood a girl with a blank, doll-like face and purple hair that hung over one eye. They didn’t smell like food. They smelled like… him. The word “pork” hit him like a physical blow

Rize’s crimson eyes—he noted them absently, thinking them colored contacts—gleamed with interest. “A room. I like that. You’re strange, Kaneki-kun.” He looked at the steaming bowl of tonkotsu ramen

He stopped at a familiar ramen stall, his usual spot. The old man smiled. “Kaneki! The usual, extra pork?”

“Please…” he choked out, tears and saliva mixing. “Why?”

Rize smiled. It was a different smile now. No curve, just a flat, predatory line. “Is it? I like the quiet. Less… interference.”
