For an hour, George sat in a plastic lawn chair, a beer in his hand, while Sheldon pointed a toy telescope at a patch of stars and lectured him on the Yarkovsky effect. George didn’t see an asteroid. He saw a frightened little boy who had too many numbers in his head and not enough comfort. So he did what any exhausted Texas father would do: he lied.

Sheldon tilted his head. “The hydrogen bonds in your hair are breaking due to humidity. The frizz is a predictable physical reaction. It’s not a moral failing, Mother.”

“You’re a strange little boy,” she whispered.

Sheldon’s eyes widened. “That’s… statistically improbable. What was the exact phrasing?”
