Specifically, his mother had just announced that Pastor Jeff was coming over for dinner to discuss Sheldon’s “spiritual development.” Sheldon had run the numbers: spiritual development = 0% empirical data, 100% metaphorical guesswork. He’d rather derive quadratic equations in the dark. Sheldon paused

Sheldon tilted his head. “Faith is belief without evidence. I prefer a hypothesis. For example: if God exists, why is the universe expanding at an accelerating rate? That seems inefficient.” It requires both evidence and humility

“Mysterious is code for ‘I don’t know,’” Sheldon replied. “In science, we say ‘insufficient data.’”

Tonight’s episode, S04E04, was supposed to be about friction. But Sheldon had already calculated the coefficient of static friction between his desk and his Star Trek: The Next Generation memorabilia. He was bored.

Mary shot him a warning look. But Pastor Jeff, to everyone’s surprise, chuckled. “You know, Sheldon, you’re not wrong. Faith isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about asking better questions.”
